EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Cyber-Space Sit Down with Donny Goines
PROPH THE PROBLEM: First off, thank you for taking the time to chill for CYBER-SPACE SIT DOWN. Being an emcee myself I'm always curious as to what makes other emcees tick, how they think, and how they got started. I'd been rhyming for as long as I remember but didn't think of pursuing it until I heard "2nd Round Knock Out" by Canibus in 1998. How long have you been rhyming, and what made you decide to turn hip hop into a career?
DONNY GOINES: Thanks for the love fam. I've been rhyming for along time, since I was 17 actually but I never took it serious until I turned 25. I just got hit with an undeniable feeling of inspiration and it compelled me to pursue this. In the back of my mind I always wanted to make music but didn't really think it was possible, now that thought is a thing of the past.
PTP: For the people that aren't familiar yet, your sound is real, raw, yet still very polished. Who in hip hop inspired you early on and how do you compare yourself to them?
DG: I was always inspired by the artists from the Mid 90's. B.I.G, Pac, Nas, Jay Z, Mobb Deep, etc. but back in those days it was just as a fan. Now as a artist myself I try to create that feeling I had within others. I am a very polished artist in the sense of recording because I'm a studio rat but overall I have a long way to go before I master my craft.
PTP: Who do your fans now compare you too and why?
DG: Funny enough people always say I remind of the era I just mentioned. They say I reminded them of the days when Hip Hop was Hip Hop. I guess I can understand where that comes from because whether I do it on purpose or not I am heavily influenced by that era.
PTP: After releasing several acclaimed mixtapes such as "Off The Books" with DJ BEDTYME and "About the Author" you've released a solid album "Minute After Midnight." Was the process of creating an album different from the process of creating a mixtape? Explain how.
DG: This process really was a very thought out and calculated process compared to my previous projects. Not to say that I didn't take them serious or anything like that but "Off the Books" took me about 12 hours to finish, "About the Author" was about 15 hours so on and so forth to where as my album took months to finish and complete. My thinking process was completely different and I really tried to complete a solid product all around the board. I stand by my album %100 and the best is yet to come.
PTP: You've got quite a buzz right now. How did you go about establishing and mainting that buzz. How vital has the web been to your success as an independant artist?
DG: I did it by doing things such as this. Taking every interview, throwing songs out there, working hard and staying determined. It surely was no overnight thing. I worked VERY hard to get where I'm at and it was no easy task. The Internet has been the biggest aid to my career thus far when it comes to promotion and such. I love the blogs and websites and without them you would have no idea who I am.
PTP: Now that the album has been released, what's next for Donny Goines in 2009?
DG: I have many things planned but I just take things one day at a time and see what happens. I think this year is gonna be a great one and I am very optimistic and hopeful. In the meantime though, the hustle never stops.
PTP: Thank you for taking the time to chill at CYBER-SPACE SIT DOWN. Its been fun but the grind continues so we gotta keep it moving. Any final comments?
DG: Much love and I thank you for all the support. Please support "Minute After Midnight" and pick up a copy at any popular online retailer. iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, etc. Much love and thank you for all the support. I love ya'll.
